Founded in 1989

Back in 1989, Four Seasons was born in the Grand Arcade, thanks to the vision of Simon Taylor. It was a small venture with big dreams. Only 7 years later, we moved to a bigger showroom on Street Lane, and were joined by Steve Connell (Installations Director).

“We’d just moved to Alwoodley and were looking to settle down after years of us both having jobs that required a lot of travelling and time away from home. I was working as a shop fitter and was mostly installing kitchen displays in B&Q stores around the country, up to 30 displays at a time! Originally, I went into Four Seasons because I needed a kitchen myself but luckily for me Simon’s main fitter had just left. I started fitting my first kitchen for him the following Monday and the rest is history.”

Setting the Stage

In 2001, in a very similar turn of events, Ian Sandford (Chairman) also visited the showroom looking for a new kitchen. Unfortunately, by this time Simon was suffering with cancer and preparing to close the business at the end of the year, before Ian stepped in to keep the business going:

“My part time offer of help soon lead to working six days a week, and a welcome remission in Simon’s illness meant we had three years working together, in which time I bought into the business”.

Despite some tough times, including Simon’s passing, we kept going strong, thanks to our dedicated team and the recruitment of Donna Fox in 2011 (Managing Director).

With these three pillars firmly in place, Four Seasons set the stage for the next 13 years and beyond. Steve brought with him a wealth of experience as an established kitchen fitter, coupled with an impeccable eye for detail.

Ian contributed a solid foundation in kitchen sales and product knowledge. Meanwhile, Donna illuminated the team with her innate talent, transforming into an award-winning designer and invaluable asset to the business.

Our Success Story

Reaching 35 years in business is no small feat. Donna credits our success to a combination of things:

“Always striving for the best quality products, fair pricing, taking great pride in our customer service, award winning design skills, keeping informed and offering the latest trends and technologies, and adapting to ever changing economic environments. Mostly I think it comes down to always having a team who really care about what they do, everything good stems from that.”

Ian and Steve agree that our award-winning designs, top-notch service, and passionate team are what set us apart. But looking forward, we know we need to embrace new tech and stay adaptable to keep thriving in the future.

“The business will have to embrace new technology, inevitably becoming more interactive and appealing to the next generation of clients. Hand in hand with this, will be a team who inspire the right changes and move in step with emerging technology.” – Ian

Donna also stresses the importance of making life easier for our clients; allowing easy access to our services and expertise online, flexible appointment times and providing a ‘one-stop shop’ for our clients simplifies their journey. It lets us focus on what we do best, taking the pressure off them so their project isn’t daunting or time consuming. Changing how we work to suit how you live is fundamental.

Steve adds that our commitment to expertise and personalised service will always be our ace in the hole, even in a world of mass production.

“There will always be a place for true specialists, and they will always be of great benefit to customers. A small business with a small number of people who really know the ins and outs of their products and their capabilities means the customer receives much more care and attention, resulting in solutions tailored to them. Unlike a massive company with hundreds of staff, dealing with every product under the sun, where focus is spread thin and the experience can feel quite impersonal.” – Steve

Stand Out Moments

With over three decades under our belt, we’ve seen it all. Donna, Ian, and Steve reflect on their fondest memories, from winning awards to personal milestones.

“For me there are two stand out moments. One in 2019 when I became a finalist for the Kitchen Design Awards ‘Project of the Year’ and all the team went down to the awards ceremony. The other is being the first of 9 people to ever complete the Bucks New Uni degree in Kitchen Design. It was an honour to be part of the first cohort and even nicer to walk away with a distinction!” – Donna

“My fondest memories are surviving the 2008 recession, Steve and Louise becoming parents, seeing a fresh young team thrive over the last 13 years, Donna becoming one of the first in the UK to achieve a degree in Kitchen Design, Liam buying his first house, seeing everyone was alright after Covid and not losing anyone, and Tom becoming a dad.” – Ian

“Continued satisfaction from a job well done over the years, especially when I was doing the fitting myself. We fitted a kitchen for free at Martin House Children’s Hospice as well which I’m proud of, it’s always nice to be able to give back to those in need.” – Steve
